About this course

Dr. James Greenblatt introduces a functional-medicine model for anorexia nervosa treatment and recovery. Anorexia nervosa is the result of a complex and biologically-mediated interplay between environmental, psychosocial, and metabolic factors. Research supporting robust associations between discrete biologic imbalances are objectively reviewed, illuminating critical treatment targets for today’s clinical practice.

Most traditional treatments for anorexia focus on psychology as well as increasing patients’ calorie intake. This approach ignores one of the root causes of the disorder; nutritional deficiencies arising from self-starvation that profoundly disrupt normal brain function. We can halt the rising rates of anorexia nervosa by directly addressing these nutritional deficiency syndromes and by restoring nutritional balance to the malnourished brain.

Psychotherapy has long been the first-line treatment for anorexia nervosa, followed by medications. Unfortunately, both have proven inadequate as sole interventions for anorexia. More than half of all people with anorexia are at serious risk of relapsing, spiralling downward, and even dying because of over-reliance on psychological therapies.

Prescription drugs are often used as the first-line treatment of anorexia despite very little research evidence supporting their benefit. Standard treatment approaches are fundamentally inadequate as they overlook the biological aspect of the disease including the nutritional deficiencies that disrupt all aspects of the human body and its functioning.

Upon completion, you will be able to substantiate the utility of a functional medicine approach for anorexia nervosa that honours biochemical individuality and which also satisfies the equally imperative mandates of “nourishing the brain/nurturing the mind.”
