About this course

Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, yet conventional management has remained largely unchanged for over 70 years. Antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine and thyroidectomy all have their place, but none address the underlying autoimmune mechanism driving the condition.

Tara Nelson is an experienced naturopath with a special interest in thyroid health, and has spent years refining a root cause approach to Graves’ disease that works alongside conventional treatment rather than competing with it. In this presentation Tara begins with the very first Graves’ patient she ever treated. This case taught her many valuable lessons that she shares in this practical presentation. She discusses in detail the genetic, viral, bacterial, toxic and stress-related triggers that converge to cause loss of immune tolerance to the TSH receptor.

She covers the pathology and antibody patterns that distinguish Graves’ disease from other thyroid conditions, the evidence behind nutrient and herbal interventions, and importantly, how to support patients safely alongside antithyroid medication. Tara closes with a detailed case study tracking a patient’s TSI and TPO antibodies over 16 months of integrative care, through to clearance for pregnancy.

Tara has a high level of success with these patients and is very willing to share her clinical insights. This is a thorough, evidence-based and genuinely practical session for any practitioner wanting to offer more to their Graves’ disease patients.
