About this course

Breathing strategies are surprisingly powerful techniques that you can use with many of your patients. Breathwork has demonstrated benefits in acute and chronic pain, cramps, anxiety, panic and other mental health conditions, asthma, physical performance and endurance, and many others. These techniques are easily taught to your patients and can significantly improve their outcomes.

Dr Erik Peper is a pioneering breathwork researcher and teaches practical breathwork strategies that shift habitual shallow chest breathing into slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing. This approach encourages extended exhalations, gentle abdominal expansion during inhalation, and a slower breathing rhythm of 3 to 6 breaths per minute.

Effortless diaphragmatic breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system for relaxation, reduces anxiety and tension, and lowers pain perception. These evidence-based techniques support improved health, enhanced performance, and resilience in clinical, educational, and therapeutic settings.

Dr Peper integrates breath retraining with posture improvement, cognitive reframing, and physiological monitoring techniques like biofeedback to help participants master optimal breathing habits over several sessions.

His approaches are evidence-based and used in clinical, educational, and therapeutic settings to enhance self-regulation and resilience to stress and pain.

What you receive:
  • A personalised certificate of completion including continuing education hours
  • Clear protocol explanations from some of the world's top practitioners
  • Clinical pearls for improved practice results
  • Access to your audio and video recordings via the App Store
  • A downloadable PDF of the presenter’s slides
  • Links to all referenced research papers and useful clinical handouts
  • Access to the community hub where you can get answers to your questions

From this course you will learn

  • How to exhale more air slowly without chest compression, allowing abdominal compression
  • Gentle inhalation with abdominal expansion rather than chest lifting
  • Breathing with a longer exhalation phase than the inhalation phase
  • Using physiological signs such as finger temperature to monitor breathing and autonomic balance
  • Applying breathwork to reduce pain during medical procedures and chronic conditions
  • Techniques to reduce anxiety, panic, asthma symptoms, and improve endurance
  • Methods to integrate breathing retraining with posture and cognitive strategies for overall health
  • How to use biofeedback and monitoring tools to support breathing mastery

Erik Peper

Dr Erik Peper is an internationally-recognised expert in biofeedback, holistic health, and self-regulation techniques, with a career spanning over four decades. As a professor of Holistic Health Studies at San Francisco State University, Dr Peper has pioneered research and teaching on the effects of posture, respiration, and effortless diaphragmatic breathing in improving health, reducing symptoms of anxiety, pain, and respiratory conditions, and enhancing overall well-being.

He is known for developing practical breathwork strategies that promote slow, deep abdominal breathing to activate the parasympathetic nervous system for relaxation and pain reduction.

Dr Peper has served as president of major professional organisations in applied psychophysiology and biofeedback and has authored influential books, including Biofeedback Mastery and TechStress: How Technology is Hijacking Our Lives. His work integrates evidence-based breath retraining with posture improvement, cognitive reframing, and biofeedback monitoring to empower individuals and clinicians to harness the mind-body connection for healing.

In his presentations, Dr Peper shares his extensive clinical and research expertise to guide audiences on mastering effortless breathwork for stress resilience, pain relief, and improved respiratory efficiency, making his teaching relevant across therapeutic, clinical, and performance enhancement contexts.
